Dick Cary PLP Reports

During the decade 2000-2010 Dick Cary made a detailed study of PLP forestry lands.  He organized his reports into 11 distinct sections and wrote individual reports on each section.  In 2009 he wrote an interim status report then wrote a separate PLP Summary Report in 2010 which tied together all his work the previous decade.  He then wrote a “Forest Regeneration Planning” document in 2010 that contemplated how to best stimulate the growth of new trees including fenced in areas, for the decades to come.

Finally, in 2017 Dick wrote a 120 page comprehensive history of the PLP forest looking back from the present to the 19th century.  Dick’s father and grandfather had each been the PLP Forester during their years, this is a fascinating read with lots of personal reflection.

Many of these documents had been hidden away on a lower shelf at the PLP Nature Center, last summer after discussions with Allison Hamilton she worked her magic to have them scanned and posted on the PLP website… here we have organized and linked to these documents to make for easier reading.

PLP Forest History

This is Dick Cary’s masterpiece report on the history of the PLP forests, a great read.

Forest Regeneration Planning

Over the years there has been, and continues to be, controversy about managing the PLP forests (and forests in the northeast and beyond in general) to allow for new growth and long term health.  This document is Dick’s look-ahead to the future after having finished his surveying work during the 2000-2010 decade.
